Glass fibre composite covers for industrial sewage treatment plants in the Antarctic
Light-weight glass fibre composite, series connected covers on a special sewage treatment plant in the Antarctic
A special system of a sewage treatment plant in the Antarctic is to be provided with light-weight covers for good accessibility. GPR composite covers were selected based on their versatile possibilities for use.
The accumulating black water and grey water is treated in the cleaning process of the plant and then led into the seawater. The wastewater not only accumulates from the industrial plant but also from the sanitary facilities, the laundry facility, and the canteen kitchen. According to the construction management’s specifications, the settling basin covers had to be custom-made. Full advantage could be taken here of the true-to-size production of the glass fibre composite covers could.
Access to the basins is complicated by the rough environmental conditions in the Arctic, which is simplified by using the glass fibre composite covers. Moreover, they offer unproblematic handling and therefore additional safety. It was very difficult at first to find a cover with heat-insulating and non-corrosive properties, and resistance to the extreme temperature fluctuations – these are precisely the benefits offered by glass fibre composite covers. This is bearing in mind that the covers need to be lifted out frequently to ensure the safe operation of the plant.
Pioneering quality and innovation
Glass fibre composite, series connected covers are available in many load classes, covering a wide range of different installation lengths. This allows for easier replacement of the common cast iron and concrete covers. The glass fibre composite covers that are designed as maintenance-free products offer good and safe access to the plant complex. They are light-weight, resistant to weathering and can bear heavy loads.
An engineered resin integrated during the manufacturing process makes each cover a highly developed, monolithic glass fibre composite product.
